In-app Badges
Project Overview
One of the major pain points for users of the native StandOut app was the inability to at a glance see when new action items were available to them. This was especially frustrating as they were receiving push notifications that they had new comments on priorities and / or overall comments. While best practices around the visual language had long since been established. The challenge was not a design one, planning on how to execute a simple badge system for a complex digital product took quiet a bit of consideration.
Design Process
This process began with developing userflows for the personas inherent to the platform, the team leader and the team member. These userflows were repeatedly revisited and revised as the StandOut native app had been around for two years without notification badges and lots of possibilities had to be explored.
My Role
As part of a two-person multidisciplinary team, I focused on the experience and interactions of putting together a robust notification / badge system. I was involved in the entire process from start to finish including research, architecture, sketching, wireframing, final interfaces and user acceptance testing.
Challenges
The temptation to stop looking for edge cases was constant. However, remaining vigilant from the planning stage through the development process was essential to the success of this project.
Sketches & Wireframes
The wireframes developed for this project had to take into account many different scenarios and interactions between team leaders and team members, being accurate here would be crucial.
The Badges
Now team leaders and team members had clear visual cues to compliment push notifications by indicating where they had new comments. No more guessing, problem solved.
